Sassafras to the Sea | South Carolina | Autumn 2020

Let’s have a conversation around elevation, shall we? A conversation around our communities - built and natural, from the Upstate to the Lowcountry. A conversation around collaboration, cooperation, idea creation. Let’s think about building connection through common cause. Why you might ask? A recent journey to the bottom of the earth delivered a clear message, a clarion call amidst Antarctica’s icy beauty: the water is on its way. Sure, we knew this to be true, but sometimes seeing is believing, and the gravity of our new reality is starkly apparent. As the southern continent changes, so will our lives. We are, after all, connected. As above, so below. Okay, message received - life in this coastal state is going to change. But how might we change in response? Let’s try and find a through line despite the magnitude of circumstance….

Let’s start with a ground level tour, take in the state of the state, but let’s do it differently. Let’s fashion a trans-Carolina escapade as sweet as Summerville’s famous tea and as hot as an August afternoon in downtown Columbia. Let’s run from South Carolina’s highest point to its lowest - Sassafras Mountain to the sea. Let’s run her trails, along her rural roads, through her towns, and in just about every ecosystem and socio-economic class the Palmetto State has to offer. Let’s talk to people, share why we’re running. Let’s ask folks what they see changing, about their fears, and what gives them hope. Maybe come up with an idea or three on how we could do things differently, a bit better. Let’s have a conversation around the fraternity of our uncertain but shared future.

But buckle up, this one’s gonna be a doozy.
