016: Sinking City 111 / Wagener Terrace

The Last Dance.

The Sinking City 111 finale took us to the far, northwestern corner of the peninsula, culminating in a fun, fourteen mile tour of Wagener Terrace. The heat lifted, the light was lovely and our legs felt light as we made our way around one of Charleston’s more relaxed boroughs.

We managed to turn out one of the longest durations on foot, taking pictures aplenty and perhaps not wanting the adventure to end. But as the saying goes, the end of one journey is just the beginning of the next. It seemed much of the neighborhood was out and about, stretching socially distanced legs and shaking out a long hot summer day. We struck up conversations on everything from sea level rise to the oddities found on certain streetscapes. Had a chance to chat with old friends, and were even harangued by a feisty local who took issue with our makeshift finish line.

It was *the* way to end, in all the right ways. We caught the several stages of sunset, felt a lift in the old legs as night fell and temperatures dropped, second guessed the last couple of miles as we bonked a bit and wound our way through the last few blocks in the dark. It took a few days longer than originally planned, but we got it done. We ran every single street in Historic Charleston, a learned quite a lot along the way. A huge thanks to @rickeygates for the idea and the inspiration!

Stats: 11.4 total street miles on the map, 10.9 of which are on historic dry land and .5 on artificial fill. Our total distance (with repeats) totaled at 14.4 miles.
