002: On Dragons and Designers

Hopefully you noticed the Incognita logo at the top of this site or on this page. We’re pretty stoked about it, and will be working to bring it to life through some running-specific merch and gear. Here’s a bit of background on that mark and the designer who crafted it.

After working through our early ideas on this project and settling on a name (more on that here), it was time for a logo. That’s half the fun of starting anything. We reached out to our friend J Bush, a super talented illustrator and graphic designer in Charleston who was willing to take our strange direction and channel it into something.

The initial input we gave J fell right out of the naming conversation, with a bit of a curve ball thrown in. Given the interest in old exploration maps, and their “terra incognita” warnings of “here be dragons,” a dragon symbol seemed perfectly relevant. One with wings, of course. But maybe with a bit of 70s design because we really dig those early days of the running and jogging boom.

J thought nothing of it, said he “got it,” and proceeded to knock out the right design in his first take. Below is his logo design with variations.

J, thanks much for helping us launch Incognita RC and high fives for your awesome work.

To everyone else, check in with J about your next identity, illustration or design project. You’ll be happy you did.
